Sani Sport recommends that a person's gear get cleaned at least twice a season.  Each person is different, because it depends on how intense and often an athlete plays a spor and how much they sweat.

Spray Germacides will kill germs on your equipment, but only on the surface. 

Bacteria grows in wet conditions.  When washing your gear, you cannot dry it completely, because it will crack your leather or destroy some glues.  Therefore the moisture left in your gear promotes the regrowth of bacteria.
